In a unique agreement that will provide West Virginia University significant financial and intellectual resources, Silicon Valley visionary John Chambers today (Nov. 9) announced a gift of time, talent and treasure to support a recently announced start-up engine at the College of Business and Economics.

The West Virginia University Reed College of Media has received a grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation to help strengthen local journalism in West Virginia and preserve it for the future by creating a new ownership pipeline.

Support WVU by making a gift  November 14  during the second annual WVU Day of Giving.

Contributions made on WVU Day of Giving help faculty, staff and students, like Mountaineer Mascot Trevor Kiess.

WVU Extension Service Dean Steven Bonanno announced today the launch of the Centennial Campaign, a $2.8 million fundraising initiative to preserve the treasured history of WVU Jackson’s Mill while providing critical enhancements to ensure it continues to meet the camping, recreation and educational needs for future visitors.

Among the planned improvements are a 6,000 square foot Science Technology Engineering and Math building, designed by Vannostrand Architects PLLC, that will provide hands-on learning in STEM fields; three yurts and a bathhouse to increase capacity by 36 beds; river access points; a high ropes course and zipline; and skeet, trap and rifle ranges to enhance the opportunities for outdoor recreation. 

A scholarship that honors the memory of a young woman whose dream to be a professional dancer was shattered when she died at 25 will help students in West Virginia University's College of Creative Arts live out their own dreams. 

A Morgantown couple who has given back to the University, a successful alumnus engineer, an internationally-known professor, a dedicated residence life employee, and a late director of the Mountainlair are being honored as “Most Loyals” during the 71st Mountaineer Week, a celebration of Appalachian Heritage, Oct. 19-28, on West Virginia University’s campus.

To date, the MLCA has donated more than $1.7 million to WVU Medicine Children’s. Funds from this year’s sale will go toward naming the cafeteria.

“The Mountain Loggers Cooperative Association has been a long-time supporter of WVU Medicine Children’s, and we’re very grateful for everything its members have done for us over the years, including their support of our new tower project,” Cheryl Jones, R.N., WVU Medicine Children’s chief nursing officer, who accepted the check at the auction, said. “The Association has helped numerous patients throughout the course of our relationship, and we’re so glad they will have a permanent spot in our new home.”

The WVU Foundation is organizing the 24-hour online fundraising effort as an easy way for University supporters to contribute to the University. Last year, during the inaugural WVU Day of Giving, nearly $3 million was raised.

“We’re hoping to build on the success of our first year,” said Mary Esposito, who is organizing the effort for the Foundation. “Day of Giving is a great way for alums and supporters all over the world to raise dollars for the University’s greatest priorities and opportunities. Those include scholarships and unrestricted funds at both the University and unit specific level.”
